Substantive editing

This is a collaborative process where I work closely with you to ensure that the structure, language and content of your manuscript suit the purpose, and your intended audience. A substantive edit generally involves major revision, but it is important to me that the manuscript retains your personal voice and style.

Copy editing

This service does not go as deep as a substantive edit. I will look at grammar, spelling, internal consistency and matters of style.

Proofreading

Proofreading is an end of process service. A document is proofread when it is ready to go to print or be published online. At this stage, it is a check for typos, and to see whether the final design has thrown up any glitches. All structural, style and consistency editing should have occurred long before this.

Indexing

While most smaller publications can get by with a table of contents or nothing at all, larger publications benefit from an index. This can be as simple as a list of names of people referred to in the text, or as complex as a complete index of people, places, subjects and events.

Manuscript appraisal

A manuscript appraisal looks at the general workings of your manuscript and provides you with a comprehensive report analysing the strengths of your manuscript, and the areas for improvement.

Self-published authors

If you are publishing your own book, I can provide clean and clear design work to meet printer specifications. And whether it's your life story or a book on your favourite topic, I can manage the publishing process for you, and remove the hassle. I can also provide access to online sales, including through this website to boost your circulation.

Fees

My fees are variable, depending on which services you wish to use.
